Parent nomination

The school, or an individual teacher may ask parents to nominate their children for a gifted program, or to give a portrait of the strengths of their child. this may be done with the use of a rating scale.

Advantages

  • Provides anecdotal evidence.
  • Child observed over the long term.
  • Wider view of the child, beyond the school context.

Disadvantages

  • Parent may not be able to objectively compare their child, or may not have a basis for comparison.
  • Parent may not have information pertaining to learning.
  • Complicated by the Mäori concept of whakahïhï (boasting), which may make parents reluctant to nominate their child, if the question is posed in a certain way. Asking about children's strengths and interests may be more appropriate for Mäori parents than asking directly about giftedness (Bevan-Brown, 2009).
